Container Buying Guide

Everything you need to know before purchasing a shipping container. From sizes and conditions to delivery requirements.

Container Sizes

Shipping containers come in standard sizes. The most common are 20-foot and 40-foot lengths.

20ft Container

The most versatile size. Fits in most driveways and provides ~1,170 cubic feet of storage.

  • • External: 20' × 8' × 8'6"
  • • Internal: 19'4" × 7'8" × 7'10"
  • • Capacity: ~1,170 cu ft
  • • Weight: ~5,000 lbs empty

40ft Container

Double the length for maximum storage. Requires more space for delivery and placement.

  • • External: 40' × 8' × 8'6"
  • • Internal: 39'5" × 7'8" × 7'10"
  • • Capacity: ~2,390 cu ft
  • • Weight: ~8,500 lbs empty

40ft High Cube

Extra foot of height makes it ideal for offices, living spaces, and tall equipment storage.

  • • External: 40' × 8' × 9'6"
  • • Internal: 39'5" × 7'8" × 8'10"
  • • Capacity: ~2,700 cu ft
  • • +1 foot headroom vs standard

Pro tip: If you're unsure, 20ft containers are easier to place and cheaper to deliver. You can always add a second one later.

Container Conditions

New (One-Trip)

Made in Asia, shipped to US once with cargo, then sold. Like-new condition with original paint. Best for visible locations or long-term use.

Price range: $4,500 - $7,500

Cargo-Worthy (CW)

Certified for international shipping. Has been inspected and meets structural standards. May have cosmetic wear but structurally sound.

Price range: $2,800 - $4,000

Wind & Water Tight (WWT)

Retired from shipping but still weather-resistant. Good for storage. May have surface rust, dents, or patched areas.

Price range: $2,400 - $3,200

As-Is

Containers with known issues (holes, damage, rust). Sold cheap for parts or as fixer-uppers. Not recommended unless you're handy.

Price range: $1,500 - $2,000

Our recommendation: For most buyers, cargo-worthy or wind & water tight containers offer the best value. Save money without sacrificing functionality.

What to Inspect

If you can visit the yard, here's what to check:

Doors

Open and close smoothly? Seals intact? Locking bars work?

Floor

Check for soft spots, holes, or excessive wear. Marine-grade plywood should be solid.

Roof

Look for dents, rust spots, or patches. Get inside and look for light leaks.

Walls

Check for holes, heavy corrosion, or bulging. Minor dents are normal.

Corner Posts

Structural integrity depends on corners. Look for damage or heavy rust.

Delivery Requirements

Make sure your site is ready before scheduling delivery:

You Need:

  • • Level, firm surface (concrete, gravel, or compacted dirt)
  • • 12ft wide clear path for truck
  • • No low-hanging wires or branches
  • • Someone on-site during delivery

Good to Know:

  • • Container placed ground-level (no crane)
  • • Can be placed on grass if firm enough
  • • Driver determines final safe placement
  • • Failed delivery attempts may incur fees

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Buying sight-unseen from unknown sellers

Online scams are common. Always verify the seller, check reviews, and never wire money to strangers.

Forgetting about delivery access

A 40ft container needs a lot of room for the delivery truck. Measure your access path before ordering.

Not checking local regulations

Some HOAs and municipalities have rules about containers. Check before buying.

Choosing price over quality

A cheap container with holes or rust will cost more to fix. Buy the right condition for your needs.
